Academics at Balfour Academy
Summer: (six weeks)
Students in grades 7 to 9 take courses designed to broaden their knowledge
as well as to motivate them to learn. These courses include English,
Mathematics, Science, Current Events and Spanish. The teachers choose
topics to teach that they are excited about and that will enrich the
student’s learning experience.
Students in grades ten to twelve attend a Northeastern University
courses such as African History, Psychology, Sociology and Critical
Writing, along with a study skills course which develops skills needed
in succeed in the college course. These students also take and English
and Math MCAS or SAT prep as appropriate for their grade.
School year
Only students who were in the summer program qualify for the tutoring
component.
During the school year after school tutoring is provided two days
a week. Students receive one-to-one tutoring from Northeastern University
students in subjects that they and their parents choose. The focus
here is to assist in homework and studying tests with the goal of
improving grades.
